Welcome to the 2025-26 NHL Season! Man it feels good to write that.
I'm debuting a new blog called "Working the Loom," where I'm going to be sharing my live thoughts on tonight's game.
What will this look like going forward? I don't quite know, but let's sit back and enjoy the start to another season of St. Louis Blues hockey.
8:09 ET
I only feel right starting this by making a couple of predictions, so here are two: the first goal of the season will be scored by Cam Fowler, and one of Nick Bjugstad, Pius Suter or Logan Mailloux will score as well.
8:24 ET
It looked like Pius Suter was going to start on the second line, but Brayden Schenn moved back up to reclaim the role. That line was money last year, and they look dangerous again. So far, the Blues haven't been able to generate much sustained o-zone time, but most of it has been with Schenn, Jordan Kyrou, and Dylan Holloway out there.
8:39 ET Robert Thomas had a great shift but couldn't finish off a Zach Bogosian turnover. I have liked what I have seen from Mailloux so far, he's got a great reach and his ability to jump up in the offense is as advertised. Kyrou is flying tonight, he had two in last year's opener.
8:42 ET - Ryan Hartman (1) - 1-0 MIN
Hartman always tears it up against the Blues. Broken play as he chipped it over Holloway's stick, and a diving Mailloux inadvertently knocked it in.
8:44 ET - Matt Boldy (1) - 2-0 MIN
That's a defensive breakdown by guys you rely on to not let that happen. Thomas, Snuggerud, Fowler and Parayko let Boldy get prime real estate of Binnington, who had no chance.
8:50 ET - End of the 1st
Some good things early, but ultimately the two quick goals taint that period. The penalty kill looked good, but they need to do a better job staying out of the box.
9:14 ET
Really good pressure from the Blues to start the second. We're getting the first look at the power play.
9:23 ET
There's been a lot of talk about getting offense from the Blues' defense, but Tyler Tucker isn't usually who comes to mind. He had a golden opportunity in tight earlier and just drew another penalty driving to the net.
9:31 ET
We haven't seen much from Jimmy Snuggerud and Jake Neighbours yet, but they're switching lines. Snuggerud-Suter-Joseph is interesting, but should be hard to play against.
9:34 ET - Joel Eriksson Ek (1) PPG - 3-0 MIN
That one hurts. Kyrou with another close call on one end, then Schenn takes another penalty. Eriksson Ek all alone on a rebound.
9:46 ET - Ryan Hartman (2) - 4-0 MIN
Parayko looked to have gotten hooked, but no call. You gotta keep playing, and Hartman scores the weakest goal of the four.
9:54 ET
Good period to watch, bad one on the scoresheet. I work early mornings, so that does it for me tonight. See you soon!
